Quote of the day

Has any team played an entire NFL season and never trailed?

The New Orleans Saints haven't so far, and I'm starting to wonder if they ever will in this seemingly karmic season.

After their shocking 48-27 rout of the Giants on Sunday, they are unbeaten, untied and unchallenged.

At 5-0, they are the Usain Bolts of the NFL. They bolt to the lead from the gate and leave their opponents gasping in the dust.

Sunday was the Saints' fifth wire job of the season. This time, though, they stepped up in class. This was against the New York Giants, not even two years removed from a Super Bowl triumph, who strutted into New Orleans with an unbeaten record and the league's top-rated defense.

And it wasn't close.

We Saints fans have been waiting our whole lives for this, and it feels so damn good.

Yes, and think of us older folks, who have been watching the Saints for more than 40 years! It does feel good, but I keep wondering if it is going to end. At various forums, I see the same thing - people asking "are we really that good, or have other teams been having really bad days?". Time will tell, but the ride is some fun. It's especially lovely for me, I live in North Louisiana, where the Cowboys have a huge following, and I'm really enjoying watching their epic failure this year.

Fiance wanted to watch the game but we were in PA, the only place in the country with a Giants blackout. Turned out to be a good thing, given how shitty the Giants did (although he does have a soft spot for the Saints). Oh, and we're getting married in N.O. in March! Woo hoo!

Given that the Titans will challenge the Lions 0-16 mark this season it's nice to have another team to pull for.
As an aside I had of course been familiar with the career of Bobby Hebert but had never known him as "The Cajun Cannon" or that he hailed from Cut Off, LA. This internet thing may make it yet.

P.S. Roll Tide.

is this the year we'll be going to the pro football promised land!!!!

i have suffered with this team since the beginning...

hell, i was in tulane stadium for the home exhibition opener and was in the north end zone when the first regular season kickoff was run back for a touchdown by john gilliam.....

through mecom's idiocy, bum phillips stupidity in bringing back some houston has-beens, and jim "let the defense win the game in the second half" mora....

and then my fury at tom benson about the way he treated the city after katrina....

i hope this continues.....

I can understand the feeling. I've been raised with the Falcons.

Even though we actually made that one Super Bowl, we've never had back-to-back winning seasons. Every time we seem to be progressing ... BAM!

Jamal Anderson tears his ACL. Chris Miller gets concussion #7,192. Steve Bartkowski fails. Michael Vick fails to learn the offense (he was a failure long before the dogfighting). Bobby Petrino. Teammates Jim Mitchell and Art Malone get into a fight in the huddle. Bad draft picks - Steve Broussard, Devin Bush, Michael Booker, Marcus Cotton.

All that we haven't done is draft Art Schlicter or go out on a lake in a party boat.

And lest we forget...

Russell Erxleben.
Russell Erxleben (born January 13, 1957 in Seguin, Texas) is a former American football player and currency investor. He shares the record for the longest field goal in NCAA history, originally set in 1977 while playing for the University of Texas. Erxleben was a three-time All-America punter (1976, 1977, and 1978). He was convicted of securities fraud in 1999, and was released from federal prison in 2005.

In 1979 he was drafted in the first round (eleventh pick overall) by the New Orleans Saints. The unexpected selection, the eleventh overall in the draft, remains the highest selection of a kicker in the draft.

I was just hoping the Saints were going to score 50 points per your twitter announcement yesterday. Missed it by thhhaaat much. Your freeballing jaunt across Houston would have been worth the loss, even if I am a Giants fan.

After watching the History Channel's slew of shows about the end of the world and then witnessing the Saint's march towards the Super Bowl I'm getting a little nervous, but if the Saints go all the way it will be worth it.

The name "Cajun Cannon" goes back to Hebert's days at Northwestern State University where he quarterbacked the Purple Demons throwing to Mark Duper who went on to fame with Dan Marino... the name really took off when he became QB of the USFL's Michigan Panthers throwing to Anthony Carter. Just a little shit fact for ya.
