This is sooo sad, and a cruel irony that it happened in Massachusetts, a state that has legalized gay marriage. My kids' school district is very proactive regarding bullying, it is not tolerated. But kids will be kids and it is hard to fight such a thing.
There's only so much the schools/teachers can do. They can't follow each and every kid around on the playground at recess and at lunch. The only solution is something that starts at home with the parents....tolerance and acceptance of people who are different. Unfortunately, this is not always taught. I feel so terrible for that poor little boy who, at age 11, felt so helpless and hopeless. How sad.
I live near Springfield. Our town had a thirteen year old girl commit suicide. Why do these tragedies happen? I have a hard time with the whole "bullying" meme that is portrayed by the news. We strive for easy answers so "He was picked on - He killed himself - Therfore he killed himself because he was picked on". It's easy for us to digest but I think it diverts us from looking at the deeper problems of a crass, hyper-sexualized, aggresive, cut-throat society at all levels.
I also have a big problem with the GLBC crowd high-jacking this. AC obviously liked the gay angle so he went with that. Suicide is an issue across the board. I'm sorry it's not PC but it is a distraction from the fact that EVERY parent needs to monitor the mental health of their children. Not just ones that display different gender identity.
Tolerance and Acceptance are nice Becky but the world is a pretty shitty place. Unfortunately kids don't have the coping skills to deal with the stress and shit we adults have thrown at them. I long for a better world too but it doesn't seem to be right around the corner. Until then parents need to be vigilant about really getting to know their kids. Fuck the schools and their anti-bullying policies. They are useless.
