On the use of the term "infanticide"

A while back I was listening to an episode of Fresh Air on NPR and the host, Terry Gross, had as her guest some guy who used to be a leader Jesus-freakery movement, that is until he went and learned to think critically and came to the realization that the Bible was a bunch of fairy tales on the level of the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus. I can't recall the guy's name off the top of my head, and naturally I'm too lazy to go digging around for it, but it doesn't really matter anyway...What does matter is that the guy, along with his father and Jerry Falwell, were guys who were largely responsible for the whole anti-abortion movement that latched itself onto the Republican party in the late 60s and early 70s, more out of a desire to increase the political power of religion and churches than it was out of any higher moral calling or anything. Anyway, part of that interview that really stuck with me was when the guy, whatever his name was, talked about the movement's use of shocking images and coded language to really hit people in the gut with what it was they were selling. These guys apparently spent a good deal of time sitting around a table and honing their message, reinforcing it with words and images that resonated on a subconscious level. And to their credit, they were enormously successful.

It's with this in mind that I've taken note of the increasing popularity of the word "infanticide" in the place of the word abortion whenever talking heads for the right-wing are making their case in the media against abortion. Some of them, Mark Levin is one, rarely, if ever, even bothers to use the word "abortion" anymore, but he'll froth at the mouth for hours each day over how Barack Obama is the the devil incarnate because he is pro-infanticide.

So what is infanticide exactly? Well according to Dictionary.com, infanticide is defined as "the act of killing an infant." Now, last time I checked, an "infant" was a human being who'd been born and was engaged in life outside of the wound. So can someone please point to me where Barack Obama has publicly advocated killing babies as a means of population control or whatever, because I sure as shit can't recall it? I had a anti-abortion friend tell me the other day that I was pro-infanticide because I was in favor of the morning after pill. Go figure.

You see, it appears as though the word "abortion" just doesn't pack the subliminal wallop that it used to inside the wee brains of average Americans they hope to indoctrinate into their woefully-misguided worldview, so the leaders of the wingnuttery gathered together and decided to up the ante so to speak with this "infanticide" horseshit, just as they've done, if you've noticed, by replacing the term "liberal" with "socialist," and when that didn't seemed to resonate, they replaced "socialist" with "communist." Scary! And round and round and round the idiot merry-go-round we go.

I don't really have a greater point here, other than to share a trend I've noticed. I wish more responsible members of the punditry would call the wingnuts out on the use of the term "infanticide" and at least attempt to stop it dead in its tracks, because it's actually a pretty fucking revolting exhibit of rhetorical gymnastics when you try to connect the dot of terminating a pregnancy when the lifeform is merely a blob of goo, to the dot where the lifeform is actually cooing and smiling for mommy and daddy and grabbing toys and all that. It's intended to appeal viscerally at the base level of the brains and souls of the weak-minded, obviously, and it pisses me the fuck off. Why can't these assholes just engage in an honest debate? Oh, that's right...BECAUSE THEY LOSE EVERY TIME!

And can someone please explain to me why those in favor of "the culture of life" aren't out there railing against men who masturbate, because everyone knows that human life actually begins in a man's nuts.

That is all.

excellent point.. and one we need to adjust our speech to as well... for instance, I do not refer to it as "pro-choice/pro life"... hell, I am not anti life..

I refer to it as "pro-choice/ANTI-choice" which to my mind is more accurate..

Cajunboy, you could just google "Obama" and "infanticide" and you would get a wealth of info on the subject. Of course, that would get in the way of your fact-free rant (which you're totally entitled to indulge in on your own blog, but allow me to offer a brief and balanced synopsis of the controversy).

The bottom line is this: the pro-life movement pushed a bill to protect babies who had been "born alive" during attempted abortions. This was clearly an attempt to force pro-choice politicians into an embarrassing vote.

Obama voted against this bill because he (and other pro choice politicians) did not want to do anything to erode abortion rights. So, technically, Obama voted against a bill that would have criminalized a specific form of infanticide. Whether you want to conclude that Obama supported infanticide is up to you... but don't be willfully ignorant of the subject.

@anon...i'm aware of that issue of which you speak, but what's happened is that the pro-lifers or anti-abortionists or whatever are now using that term in regards to all forms of abortion. like i mentioned...i've even heard using the morning after pill referred too as infanticide.

I'm pretty sure that the guy on Fresh Air was Frank Schaeffer.

I have always been struck by the generalization of the "babies being born alive" stuff.

It is doubtful women would "choose" to have a later term medical termination of a pregnancy unless there was something extremely wrong in the pregnancy and it cannot be saved for a number of reasons. It is life altering to be in that situation.

It is not so simplistic as they make it out to be. This should be a decision made by a doctor and patient based on the specific situation at hand.

Not much to add but as embellishment there is tremendous energy invested by "The Right" to protect the rights of the "unborn" but once they draw their first breath it seems the investment deminishes.
As bacci pointed out and as I have long observed it is rare to hesr a "Sanctity of Life" protest for prisoners scheduled for execution. When proposals are made to expand child healthcare benefits they are labeled irresponsible government spending. When soverign countries that pose no threat to America or their allies are carpet bombed no one on "The Right" abhors the innocent loss of life, certainly including children. More recently it has been disclosed that Psychologists and Medical Doctors participated in devising techniques of torture for the CIA and Fox et al are claiming if that's not allowed our national security is compromised and on and on and on...
Bottom line for me is the more I hear the radical right the more they remind me of parodies of themselves. I really think the ideology has failed and when the firebrands die out there will be few young people stepping up to take their place.

In a similar vein, I take great issue with those who claim that people who support a woman's right to choose are "pro-abortion" or, as you put it, "pro-infanticide". Nobody is pro-abortion. Pro-abortion would mean that we run around telling every pregnant woman to get rid of the abomination in their womb, which is utterly ridiculous. All we're doing is supporting the woman's right to choose whether or not she feels it fair to bring a child into the world depending on her circumstances, which could include anything from fears of being a bad mother, to the financial inability to support a child to extreme cases of rape and/or incest.

These are the same right-wing zealots who ex-communicate a doctor in Brazil from the Catholic Church who had the decency and the respect for another human's life, physical and mental well-being and performed an abortion on a little girl who was raped.

Lots of people dodging the issue here, preferring instead to attack crazy right-wingers (easy targets) than defend late-term abortions or "born alive" scenarios.

Inconsistency or hypocrisy on the part of one's opponents does not automatically prove one's correctness.

To be quite honest, it's difficult to justify, philosophically, a late term abortion when adoption remains a viable option.

Politically of course, I don't want the government to have the power over an individual's body... there is just too much potential for abuse. But it would be nice if supporters of abortion rights would admit that it makes them uneasy to support abortion on-demand.

the incidence of late term abortion by choice is tiny...really tiny

the vast majority of late term abortions are done when the health or the life of the mother is at risk...in those cases, adoption is not a viable option...unless you believe that the woman should die

and if men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament
