Was Dick Cheney running an "executive assassination ring" out of the White House?

A friend of mine sent over this story earlier in an email and it made me almost jump out of my chair. Keep in mind that the man making the accusation, New Yorker writer Seymore Hersh, is one of the more respected journalists of this era, which gives it a hell of a lot of weight in my mind. Raw Story reports this from a speech that Hersh gave in Minnesota on Tuesday...

The remark came out seemingly inadvertently when Hersh was asked by the moderator of a public discussion of "America's Constitutional Crisis" whether abuses of executive power, like those which occurred under Richard Nixon, continue to this day.

Hersh replied, "After 9/11, I haven’t written about this yet, but the Central Intelligence Agency was very deeply involved in domestic activities against people they thought to be enemies of the state. Without any legal authority for it. They haven’t been called on it yet."

Hersh then went on to describe a second area of extra-legal operations: the Joint Special Operations Command. "It is a special wing of our special operations community that is set up independently," he explained. "They do not report to anybody, except in the Bush-Cheney days, they reported directly to the Cheney office. ... Congress has no oversight of it."

"It’s an executive assassination ring essentially, and it’s been going on and on and on," Hersh stated. "Under President Bush’s authority, they’ve been going into countries, not talking to the ambassador or the CIA station chief, and finding people on a list and executing them and leaving. That’s been going on, in the name of all of us."

Whoa! This all sounds like something out of a novel or a movie or something. And when Hersh says "domestic activities against people they thought to be enemies of the state," does he mean US citizens within our borders? Because that'd be some big shit, baby. Big shit!

Now, I haven't been able to spend much time net surfing today and I've yet to make it through my RSS feed, but has this been written about much elsewhere? Because I haven't seen anything.

I had not heard this. Last I heard from Hersch were last summers reports, vehemently denied by the Bush admin., that U.S. was conducting covert operations in Iran in preparation for widening the conflict in that geographic region.(Preparing The Battlefield, The New Yorker)
Of course he burst on the scene with the story of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam but has been widely criticized as an off-the-wall conspiracy theorist, mostly by those he targets for examination.
But if people continue to dig (how about a special prosecutor?) I suspect we will find what we have suspected all along, that the Bush admin. was the most corrupt executive branch in U.S. history.

Too bad Hersh didn't have a New Yorker fact checker at his speech.
