Joaquin Phoenix's bizarre appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman

I just watched this interview and I truly don't know what to make of it other than it's probably the most bizarre celebrity interview I've ever seen. The guy is either stoned out of his mind, completely insane, or pulling some sort of stupid performance art act. Whatever the case, I love the fact that Letterman just completely gives up and sets out to make him look like an even bigger ass than he already is...

CB - I just watched this interview and I gotta say, it was probably one of the most uncomfortable things I've seen. Truly.

I googled Joaquin Phoenix as soon as I saw this on Letterman to see if anybody thought the same thing that i did, WHAT A MESS! Man, he was completely stoned, just out of it. Even when he didn't say anything but just sat there, his body language was so strange. This guy is big time high on something AND he is probably loosing it too. It was just too weird. He was disrespectful and I'm glad Letterman didn't take his shit.

I am still befuddled by this interview, I know Joaquin rarely acts like your average bear, but he was almost autistic in his behaviour, humorless and out of touch with reality. Good for Dave, he tried, but he was getting no where.

He is typically given many seemingly on hallucinogens interviews, such as a couple years back on the red carpet he was describing the frogs in and on his head. He no doubt wanted off the set from jump-off. I've seen behavior first hand like this, and would not be surprised if he had a heroine carrying his disdain, to all envolved and self-affect.

I'd be interested in what transpired when he pulled off his shades to pull in for dave's eye exam. Words were had and the quick cut was no doubt to get him off air before an interuption occured. I hope Phoenix is well, and stays so as he is a great actor, following in his brothers path.

Just saw this as well and Joaquin seemed like he was tripping his balls off. Dave was great and I was just waiting for him to ask Joaquin what the hell he was on.

This is very, very sad. I hope he doesn't end up like his brother.

The rumor is that, yeah, he's doing this weird real-life performance thing.

Obviously, the dude is a great actor. After Walk the Line, he announced his retirement from acting and to start a career in hip hop.

However, Casey Affleck is going around with him and filming his public events with a little portable camera. The thought is that he's doing a mockumentary and acting it out in real life.

Last month, he made his "rap" debut at a club in Vegas. Apparently, he could barely string together a sentence and he capped off the 1-song set by falling off stage.

I do hope that this is, in fact, part of a documentary that will be hilarious. If he actually has lost his mind, it would be really sad.

Hope your right, that is kinda brilliant if he is doing that. After a second viewing of it from the DVR he was seemingly looking healthy, and Dave was def. in on something, SO I hope your right!

It's all a movie making fun of Thomas Mapother, an artist who's very famous to a very small group of people. Brilliant stuff

Yeah, I too have been fascinated by his "retirement" and the fact that Casey Affleck has been filming all of this. What the HELL is going on?

C'mon CB, you know people, you have connections, you were a one-man Palin investigative team FIGURE IT OUT FOR US!!!

And it's really odd to me that he wants out of the limelight (or so it seemed) yet he agrees to do horribly awkward Asperger's interviews. WTF??

I desperately want to watch this clip but I can't because Youtube has one of those country filters on it so only people in the US can watch it (and I'm not in the US). That is totally shitting me. (And none of the supposed solutions I googled worked, except I didn't try the download firefox etc or use a proxy server cos that's just too much effort). grrr

Wow. He seems to have a very serious mental illness. I was very uncomfortable watching this. I hope he gets the help he needs for whatever he's ailing from, poor guy

I simply cannot believe this is any kind of hoax or put-on. No one would be that much of a loser.

It was all an act and Dave was in on it. If you watched the video again, look at Joaquin's attempts at keeping a straight face while providing Dave with great one-liners. If Dave had really been upset with the way that interview was going, Joaquin's segment would have been cut suddenly short.

Not only was it an act; it was a brilliant one.

it’s hard to tell whether Joaquin Phoenix was faking it or not during that Letterman appearance, especially since he’s such a talented actor…
