Wafa Sultan has a huge set on her
Last night a reader named Jennifer emailed this video of a someone, a woman no less, a woman named Wafa Sultan, who took to the airwaves of Al-Jazerrra in 2006 and essentially ripped the radical wings of the Islamic religion a new asshole. A couple of months later, she was named one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people in the world. In that article, they credited her with having "given new meaning to the word 'bad.'"
The interview below took place on Feb. 21, 2006, and within days Sultan, a Syrian born psychiatrist living in California, became a lightning rod of controversy in the Arab world. Some hailed her as an enlightened reformer, others branded her a heretic and an infidel and called for her death. Whatever anyone thinks of her, she has balls. Big fucking balls.
Below is the aforementioned talk show interview, which I'd sadly never seen prior to last night, that made Wafa Sultan a household name across the Middle East. The last two minutes of the thing almost made me want to stand and cheer at my computer, as she closed her arguments with the following dagger into the heart of radical Islam...
We have not seen a single Jew blow himself up in a German restaurant. We have not seen a single Jew destroy a church. We have not seen a single Jew protest by killing people. Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them.

She is absolutely right. But there are a couple of things that should be added.
Firstly, if she is talking about palestinians blowing themselves up, that is unfair. Who knows what israeli's would do if their land was occupied and their people indiscriminately terrorised and killed by a whole army, children, women and elderly alike? who knows what desperation you yourself would be driven to if you had seen pieces of children lrying on the street? I cannot judge. Also, the Jews may not have blown themselves up in German restaurants, but they have no qualms in acting like belligerent bullies and disproportionately bombing (with phosporus) civilian areas of the most highly crowded stretch of land on earth- gaza. they dont kill themselves, they just kill others.
secondly, i know PLENTY of christians who see their way as the only way and who see all others as lost, or, at worst, as infidels. in fact, all 3 main religions have this aspect to them. and it has led to many wars instigated by ALL sides.
lastly, i do agree that in recent times, the muslim world has not offered as much to humanity as it could have. but people need to know about the civilisation-altering developments the muslim world gave europe and the west in the way of mathematics, science, medicine and astronomy from 700AD to the 1400sAD when the moors occupied spain and parts of italy and france. They were responsible for the first univeristy in europe (in Cordoba, which was also a city so enlightened under moorish rule that muslims, christians and jews lived peacefully side by side). the moors were also the ones who gave us, the west, access to all the great greek philosophers, as they were the only ones who could read both latin and greek. they translated all the great works before they were destroyed or lost. but i stress, so so much of what we know when it comes to science, technology, mathematics and medicine is due to the arabs and what they brought to europe during 700 years of occupation. even if you go to madrid now, any tour guide will tell you that the complex irrigation system they still use to this day is a fortified version of the same one the arabs installed.
basically, the muslim world needs to feel pride over what it has given, and work to re-create this golden age. they have a tremendous capacity to give so much to the world.
