Meet Chesley (Sully) B. Sullenberger, pilot of US Airways Flight 1549, today's greatest American hero

(via Gawker)

According to Mayor Bloomberg, who has been all over the tube around these parts today, Sullenberger was the last man off the plane after sweeping it twice to check for passengers. According to multiple press reports, it was the first time in 45 years that an airplane has crash-landed into the water without fatalities.

This probably goes without saying, but today was a weird day to be alive in New York City.

Awesome job to ditch the plane in the water and everyone survived. Sully is a hero.

I'd like to buy Sully a beer, coffee, a puppy, cable for a month...it's up to him. I agree that yesterday was a weird day to live here. Sully will forever be my homeboy.

i turned on the tube just before four to see people being pulled to safety. as soon as they confirmed that everyone aboard was rescued, i got that lump in my throat that is reserved for those rare moments we witness true valor. sully, his co-pilot and crew, the NYPD, NYFD, AND all those waterway ferries who rushed to their aid reconfirmed my pride as a new yorker. bless 'em all!
