"It's exactly like Gump, except no AIDS"

I have to admit to being a wee bit sensitive to the "it's the same thing as Forest Gump" line of criticism of the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. After all, I did choose it, quite passionately mind you, as my number one film of 2008. But I understand the criticism of it...there are certainly some glaring parallels in the story lines and plot points between the two films. A friend of mine thinks that they should have titled the film, Forest Gump: Gump Harder. But here's the thing...I don't really care. Variations of the same stories are told all the time in the world of film and television. All I care about is that I was swept away in an epic story when I was in the theater watching the movie. I can't even begin to imagine what sort of dark-hearted cynic sits though such a film and nit-picks it to a bloody death. That sort of person should just give up, for they have lost all ability to feel anything.

Now, with all of that said, this is pretty fucking funny...

And oh by the way...the Oscar nominations came out this morning. The complete list is here.

Weird. I though Slumdog Millionaire was the closest Forrest Gump imitator I've seen in a very long time. So at least two of the movies nominated are like Forrest Gump without the AIDS.

Seriously, will there be no end to Forrest Gump's iron grip on movie-making?

Gotta' say that at the concert on the Mall on Sunday, when Tom Hanks was doing his Lincoln thing, all I could think of was Jenny wading out into the pool, yelling "Forrest" - him saying "Jenny" and meeting her in the pool. Sweet!
