McCain finally moves to stem the rank stupidity of some who support him

I have to say, I've given John McCain a lot of shit here lately, deservedly so mind you, but I have to give the guy props for finally stepping up to try to douse the flames of hateful ignorance that have become the hallmark of his campaign rallies of late. It's so very sad that it's even come to this, but the truth of the matter is that he and his surrogates are largely responsible for the idiocy gone wild in the conservative base of the Republican party. Still, this put a lump in my throat...

You see, this is the McCain that I used to love. This is the McCain I would have walked through fire for in 2000 to defeat Bush in the Republican primary. Where the fuck has this guy been hiding?

Deep down, it has to eat at his soul that he's had to sell himself out that way that he has in a desperate attempt to win the presidency. Unfortunately, it's too little, too late. But I have to tip my hat to the old guy for finally stepping up and doing the right thing by trying to squash the "Obama is an Muslim/Arab" ignorance. I actually felt sorry for him when the hayseeds began to boo him. Coming to the realization that a large swath of the people who support you are ignorant dipshits must be a very hard thing to come to grips with...

If he had run his entire campaign with such honest decency, he'd probably be in the lead right now; the obvious disconnect between 'straight talk express' and the campaign's conduct has caused a lot of damage. I think his people may be starting to realize this.

At least he had the balls to 'man up'.

the thing is...yes, initially, i felt exactly the same way, about time, but really, what happened is the media was starting to loudly say how bad it was that he was not cutting these people off, and he HAD to do it I think. Had he on his own without any prompting from anyone denounced these people at his rallies before it got to this point, I would give him more props, but really, it took some Republicans saying out loud in the media that this was wrong for him to stop his supporters. About time, but a little too late for me to pat him on the back for taking the high road, he is just following others.

I do not think he did this out of some great sense of honor, or he would have pulled(or never ran) his ads stating essentially the same crap his supporters are now voicing. He did this because he was losing supporters, even some leaders within his own party. I suspect he was advised, by legal counsel, to denounce these people, or be linked--if not listed as an accessory, if/when one of his loyal supporters decides to actually follow through with their threat to "KIll" the "Muslim" "Terrorist".

CB,

I think this piece might echo your sentiments.

I'd like to agree with you CajunBoy, especially since I used to feel the same way about McCain. The sad thing is anonymous 2 hit it on the head - he wasn't motivated to do the right thing, it's another ploy to keep/win votes and seem like a somewhat decent man. I just keep thinking of how 2000 McCain would despise the hell out of 2008 McCain...

If he'd actually said "No, Obama isn't an Arab, he's a christian/american/whatever", I would think a lot more of him. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to see something of the old McCain, but he's still got a hell of a long way to go.

I actually felt a bit bad for him after seeing this. He looked so defeated. Saddened. Guilty. Finally being confronted by this by his supporters. He had to address it. I really wonder if he did know how bad it was getting, or was he being shielded from this by his campaign people? I do think there was some shielding going on, like what has been going on with Bush being 'bubbleized' by his administration.

McCain's supporters are getting out of hand. The threats of violence are real. I can actually feel the anger and hatred that they have for Obama just watching the rallies on television. He and that moron he picked for VP are stirring up all of these emotions and he knows that if something horrific happens, he will be complicit in it. These are scary times!

Sorry Caj. His change of heart in going on the dark side means nothing. You can't put the kind of crap into motion that he and his people put out there and NOW have a crisis of conscience because you were exposed. McCain was a douche for going there. And given his staff's continuation of the Ayers garbage now aimed at Michelle Obama, he gets no credit in my book.

Ez.

@Normal Isn't

I agree. He didn't say that Obama wasn't Arab, that just because one is Arab doesn't mean someone is a terrorist, that Obama is a natural born citizens (which should be a given but...).

I'm not impressed.

I wish people were arguing "Whether he's Muslim or not doesn't matter because this country was founded on religious freedom" rather than "No, he's not Muslim - he's Christian."

So do you think this is an honest statement or will he turn back around and throw another cheap shot even bigger?
