Obama's 3AM text message

If I were a strategist for the John McCain I would pounce all over the titanic ineptitude exhibited by the Obama campaign with this whole "texting the supporters with the VP choice" thing. Seriously, what the fuck was that? I get a text from the Obama folk at 3AM on a Saturday fucking morning, hours after the press has already trumped them on the VP scoop, at the cost of a rumored $1,000,000?

I can just see the ads running now...

Ominous voiceover: It's 3AM. You and your children are sleeping peacefully. Until your cell phone starts ringing that is.

Cut to: (A little girl in her bed looking frightened. She rubs her eyes and her lower lips quivers.)

Little girl: Mommy Daddy what was that noise that woke me up from the dream I was having about unicorns and rainbows? Mommy Daddy I'm scared!

Ominous voiceover: Who do you trust not to waste taxpayer money by sending you horseshit text messages from the White House at 3AM and scaring the bejesus out of your peacefully sleeping children in the process? John McCain would never do that because John McCain can't even operate an electric toothbrush, much less a mobile device.

John McCain voiceover: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

Goddamn I'm annoyed right now. And don't even get me started on Joe Fucking Biden!

Completely agree with you. I'm awake at 3:30am now because I can't fall back to sleep. I'm posting this message anywhere I can as retribution for getting woken up at 3AM!!! I can't believe my f-ing phone went off at 3:00 in morning. I was a Clinton supporter in the primary who has moved toward Obama, but was really hoping it would be Clinton. Now I am f-ing bleary eyed, to hear it is f-ing Joe Biden (nothing wrong with Biden, its' just 3am). Pretty class-less if you ask me to send this at 3am if they really are trying to woo us Hillary folks. I realize he doesn't have to pick her for veep, but geez, I'm grumpy as hell and got a text to hear he didn't go for the candidate I was hoping for. I will no attempt to go back to sleep.

I don't know how to say this, so I'll just um try and spit it out and ... oh god, just, you know, please don't laugh at me, ok? OK? Wow. This is really really hard ... ok, right. I'll just say it. Now. Right.

I turn my phone off at night.

Maybe you should try it some time.

ps What do VPs do anyway?

I'm sorry, I love how they sent it out at 3am instead of waiting for sunrise. It's like Obama just drunk texted you because you're special and he was up late and just got back from the traveling, and he's got to head to Springfield tomorrow, but if you're awake maybe he could just come over, and maybe bring his friend Joe, you up for that?

I wonder if Hillary Clinton got that 3:00 a.m. phone call. 'Twould be especially nasty if the Obama waited until then to give her a courtesy call, but that would be wrong, oh so wrong. I'm glad I didn't sign up for that.

But for the timing of the announcement, I would have thought this a brilliant ploy. Obama's campaign has been brilliantly run thus far, and it apeared that this was another excellent opportunity for them. The campaign had the media worked up into an orgiastic frenzy the past couple of days, only to climax at 3:00 a.m. with Joe Biden! Nothing against climaxing at 3:00 a.m. or Joe Biden, but I can't wrap my brain around the notion of connecting the two. Biden seems more of a 9:30 p.m. kinda guy. Put McCain down for a respectably Republican 8:30 p.m.

It seems odd that the candidate of change selected a long-time insider like Biden as his running mate, but Obama really needed to compensate for his most obvious deficiencies, and Biden does that. A less obvious deficiency is Barack's awkwardness in mixing it up with the common folk, something at which John McCain is surprisingly good, which, I suppose, is why McCain wants joint town hall meetings and Obama doesn't.

On to the conventions, which I can't help but watch even though I know nothing is going to happen.

Grow up. If you are pissed about this then you should find a happy place and sit there for awhile.

You've heard of the off button right?
What a whiny retard you are.
Have some cheesecake and go back to bed.

Wow, you really are a loser. "Oh god, it wasn't Clinton. My world is over. . .I'll go vote for McBush now, even if he is totally against everything Clinton is for! The country must burn in hell for not wanting the Clintons!"

What stupid fucks you are. You're complaining that they did something YOU TOLD THEM TO DO. Oh, wait, are you telling me you were signed up for this 'event' _against your will_??

This is a 24hr, 21st century world. The Obama campaign is in full gear at all times. The Mccain camp has no clue.

Don't be ignorant. The press somehow found out that Biden was Obama's running mate, and the Obama campaign needed to keep their promise to you, so they sent out the text message. If he didn't he would be bashed for not sending it. Since he did, he's being bashed for sending it. Don't play into the media here. Biden is a great choice, and the text message should not be a factor in who you vote for!

John McCain can't even get his Mid East borders and national leaders right (German president Putin for Christ's sakes) and we're worried about a 3 am text message? I love you CB, but c'mon! Seriously?

I didn't expect this from you. I was actually waiting for you to say something about Michael Phelps stealing the Aussie swimmer's girlfriend actually.

And Joe Biden is just the right person to put his boot up the Republican Party's treacherous ass. He already has, in fact. Plus he has a deep foreign policy track record. Someone made a great point today that by choosing someone who doesn't necessarily agree with him, but would make a great veep anyway, he's bolstering his platform of change. In other words, if he could get over Biden's early remarks, so can we.

My favorite quote of the campaign to date:
Obama: "He's been bringing change to Washington for decades! Jooooeeee Biden!!!"

You can't make this stuff up.

Hey, look on the bright side. At least you gave a political organization your personal information to sell to advertisers.

Uh, yeah. Last thing you'd want is a device that might alert you to an emergency while you're asleep. Do you turn off the fire alarms too?

Nice try at making the blog owner look like an idiot. Thinking before you open your mouth. Maybe you should try it sometime.

Did they wake Obama up at 3AM to get his permission to send out this text?

They should have discussed this ahead of time. Thanks for ruinining my day, Obama campaign.

I'm glad I slept through the whole night and got the news by checking the news on my mobile in bed when I woke up. The disappointment in hearing it was Biden required me being in a laying position.

lol'd at most of these comments. I think lack of experience with a lot of self-importance is yielding some interesting results. He really should have picked Hillary...

I agree. Have they heard of a twitter account? Gosh.

There's a lot of reasons people would not want to turn a phone off. As examples, my daughter likes to use hers as an alarm, and I've had employees who are hard-line-free. Unless you're into taking the "regular" phone off the hook at night, the suggestion seems like a non-starter.

Frankly, it looks like the "tech savvy" Obama campaign didn't realize the sending upwards of a million text messages (a) takes a significant amount of time to implement and (b) wouldn't be fully operational during peak hours. Just because they pressed the SEND button, the messages don't all immediately get sent. They queue in the message server and get offloaded at a finite rate. That rate is gated by the send rate of the carrier as well as the amount of other people using the function at the same time. The whiz kids should have seen this coming. Oh, wait. They all think technology is magic.

Obama's people may not have considered the limits of SMS/MMS technology before making the text messaging announcement promise to his followers, or underestimated the number of people wanting an SMS.

Sending out a burst of 3M text messages would create queueing and delays at multiple points in overall transport and delivery within and across the wireless carriers. So Obama's team could have well "hit the button" around 11pm but individuals not receive the message for hours.

The carriers would have known of this limitation, and probably did advise Obama's team on it. It would be interesting to learn the background story.

This is a little overblown, eh? Do you get this mad every time someone randomly texts you at 3am on a Saturday night? From your blog, you make it sound like you're always up at that time of night anyway.

Or are you just mad it's from Obama and it's about Joe Biden?
