michigan is definitely interested in les miles

i've long been befuddled by google. adding to that growing befuddlement is the fact that when LSU football coach les miles' name is googled, a link to something i posted last month, a post titled "les miles is the ronald reagan of college football," pops up towards the top of the search results, usually in the top 20. now granted, that post was linked around a bit, but les miles is a much-written about man and much has been written about him on sites that write about him more frequently than i do and receive more traffic than this site does.

but i digress...

a result of this google oddity is that i have been getting a bit of traffic to my blog for some time from people who have googled miles' name. which brings me to my larger point...

in the last 24 to 48 hours, the approximate frame of time since michigan coach lloyd carr announced his resignation, i've noticed an emerging trend, a trend in which a markedly increased number of those hits to my blog that are the result of people doing google searches for les miles are coming from computers in the university of michigan athletic department. below i've copied and pasted the IP info from one such visit that was derived from sitemeter, a service that many bloggers subscribe to in order to track readers. this is one of at least a dozen hits that i've received from computers within the university of michigan athletic department in since monday morning.

while i am not the least surprised that the UM athletic department uses PCs as opposed to MACs, i am surprised that they use firefox. i would have imagined them to be internet explorer people.

James H, you can march all you want. The fact of the matter is that Coach Miles' heart and soul belongs to Michigan. He will do an admirable (and incredibly difficult) job in leading LSU to the national title and will then return home to his alma mater. Bo Pelini will make a fine coach for the Tigers and will help ensure a seamless transition at LSU. There should be no hard feelings among Tiger fans either toward the Maize and Blue. Coach Miles forged his manhood on the gridiron in Michigan Stadium and is among the last remaining disciples of Coach Schembechler. Michigan is calling and it would be an upset of greater magnitude than Appy State beating UM in football if Coach Miles were to choose not to answer that call. Good luck in the Sugar Bowl and cheer for the Maize and Blue under Coach Miles' leadership.

CB,

Btw, not sure what your plans are over Thanksgiving, but I will be in town again on thursday through the weekend. If you will be around, we should grab some drinks somewhere. I think the plan is to see Oakenfold on Thursday night at Pacha....

google oddities are usually a result of google trends and/or news getting hold of the post due to keywords in your article. think of it as updated, topical websearch traffic.

Dang, whenever you write the name Les Miles I want to correct you and say "fewer" miles.

Google works off of links, not pages. So, until 20 pages are linked to more often using his name as the link, the Ronald Reagan piece will stay.

The Firefox usage isn't the surprising part - it's the 1024x768 monitor size. Really? The Michigan athletic dept. can't get some nicer screens?

Internet Explorer people?! That's the ugliest criticism of Michigan that I've heard in a long time.

@anon...i know. that's what i intended. they just seem so 1990s.

Wow, this is interesting research. I happen to come upon your page from a link at thewolverine.com where I frequent the boards for recruiting news for Michigan. I just hope Bill Martin stands by the gentlemen's agreement to not directly contact Les until he has permission from the AD at LSU and minimizes the disruption towards the great season you guys are having. We would love to have Les coach our team, but ultimately the decision is his alone. Good luck on Friday against R-Kansas!

ps. I am actually surprised they us pc's. I would say around 60-65% of the computers on campus use Mac OS X 10.4.

Is it at all possible that these were students accessing the internet wirelessly from a laptop in one of the many athletic buildings at UofM? All the campus buildings have this capability. To me that would seem logical as I have personally been in the athletic buildings and the screens are indeed much larger :)

re: resolution, probably a laptop.

I'm sure they've got people looking for all the dirt on all the candidates. Blogs that mention coaches out getting drunk, owing people money, cussing at old ladies in traffic, whatever, would be worth knowing about as you winnow through the candidates.

Heck, I do that when I hire interns -- sketchy Facebook/MySpace makes me wonder what half-assed excuses they'll be giving for not showing up for work.

@j...i could never hold a grudge against les if he left, especially if he brought home a national title this year. UM is where his heart is. who are we to rob him of this opportunity if it were indeed to come.

@chuck...possibly. i still like to envision the michigan AD sitting in his office reading the nonsense that i generall post on this blog though.

LSU football coach Les Miles broke down while discussing his alma mater of Michigan and his LSU players Monday, but it remains unclear if the tears were for leaving or staying.

"They've not called," Miles said at his weekly media luncheon in reference to Monday's formal announcement that Michigan coach Lloyd Carr is retiring.

"It's unfair to Michigan to say that they should. It's unfair to me and my team. I promise you this, what I'm doing is what you should do — let it rest. I'm playing football for LSU. I love this team."

Miles teared up and paused for 15 seconds before composing himself. "And I'll not do anything to hurt it," he said as his voice broke. "Any questions?"
